Adult Homesteading: Beekeeping for Beginners

Beekeeping 101 with Daniel

Is Beekeeping Right for You?

Beekeeping is a rewarding homestead skill — but knowing where to begin can feel overwhelming. If you’ve ever dreamed of harvesting your own raw honey, reducing your reliance on store-bought sugar, or watching bees thrive on your land, this class is the perfect place to start.

Online resources can be confusing, especially since most are American and don’t always apply to our climate or homesteading style here in Southern Ontario. Before you invest time and money into bees, this in-person class will give you the clarity you need.

In this 2-hour session, Daniel will cover:

  • The biology of the honey bee

  • How much time beekeeping really takes, broken down by season

  • Realistic start-up costs and annual maintenance

  • Common risks beginners overlook (mites, AFB, and more)

  • Ontario beekeeping laws & regulations

  • Equipment selection — what you actually need vs. what’s optional

  • A true seasonal roadmap: what to expect in Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter here in zone 6a/6b

By the end of this class, you’ll know whether beekeeping is your next homestead passion… or an expensive hobby you’re glad you didn’t jump into blindly.

Daniel will guide you through a comprehensive slideshow and demonstrate inspection techniques using an empty hive. Bring a notebook — there’s lots to learn. A digital copy of the slides will be provided to all participants after the class.

The class fee is $40.00+tax per person ($45.20). Kindly ensure the full payment is made within 24 hours to help streamline the process on our end. When submitting your payment, please include your name and the class you're paying for in the comments section.

If you’re unable to attend the class, please refer to our FAQs for refund details.

Payments can be completed in-store during business hours or via e-transfer to generationsmarketplacepayment@gmail.com.

Thank you for your prompt payment!

Simcoe Farmers Market

Simcoe Farmers Market

The Simcoe Farmers Market is more than just a place to shop — it’s a community gathering spot where good things and good friends meet. Every week, locals come together to catch up with neighbours, enjoy friendly conversations, and shop for fresh, local products in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Since opening in the winter of 1980, our market has been home to passionate vendors and loyal customers. What started with a few dedicated sellers has grown into a thriving year-round market with more than 30 vendors, with up to 20 local farmers bringing in fresh, seasonal produce.

In October 2025, the Simcoe Farmers Market made an exciting move from the lower level of the Norfolk County Agricultural Society’s Homecraft building to the main level of the Grandstands Building—still located right on the Norfolk County Fairgrounds. Though it was only a short move across the grounds, it made a big difference! The new space offers bright natural light, open high ceilings, onsite washrooms, and an easy-to-navigate layout—making the market more enjoyable for both shoppers and vendors.

At the Simcoe Farmers Market, you can chat directly with the people who grow, bake, and make the products you love. Their passion, pride, and knowledge shine through in everything they sell—from farm-fresh produce and homemade treats to handcrafted goods and unique local products.

Come experience the friendly atmosphere, discover local treasures, and see why the Simcoe Farmers Market has been a Norfolk County favourite for more than 40 years!

Santa Sale 2025
Nov

Santa Sale 2025

Kick off the holidays with Port Dover students' annual Santa Sale!
This holiday craft sale has been a local tradition since the 1940s and we are delighted to keep the annual joy returning.
We've got all your favourites:

 Student Craft Sales
Each elementary school class is deciding on a different craft for their students to make and sell at the Santa Sale. Support both the students and their school by buying their handmade crafts and decorations! These gems are the highlight of the event.

 Penny Table & Lucky Draw
Grab your tickets, scope out the prizes, and get ready! At regular intervals throughout the day, another table full of raffles will be drawn! The Penny Table keeps the festivities going as excited ticket-holders decide which prizes to go for and return after each draw to see if their numbers are among the lucky winners. Be sure to claim all your winning Penny Table prizes by the end of the event! And then to cap it off, at the end of the day we'll draw the table of Lucky Draw prizes and contact those winners directly.

 Bake Sale
Get yourself a delicious home-made sweet treat, or even a whole plate or box of them!

Craft Table & Face Painting
Activities for kids to enjoy and to raise funds for our school!

Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair is back the week of the Santa Sale, and will be open during the Santa Sale, too! Stop in at the Learning Commons to have a browse and buy some books. These sales support the classrooms!

Vendors
Last but certainly not least, these local vendors put the SALE in Santa Sale! Get some Christmas shopping done, decorate your home for the holidays, or treat yourself to a gift. You've earned it.

Fun fact, the very first of these events hosted by the Port Dover Public School "Home and School" association were also at the end of November! They soon became an annual event, sometimes in December and sometimes earlier in the fall, with different features added for a year here and there or sticking around for decades. This tradition moved from Port Dover Public School to Doverwood to Lakewood as the schools changed, but what hasn't changed is the heart and joy at the centre of it!We're glad we get to keep it going. Join us at the Santa Sale and enjoy the holiday magic. You can even be part of making it happen by volunteering! Details are on our website under Volunteer, or you can sign up right here: https://volunteersignup.org/YLBQW
See you there!
