Travel Thursdays - The Woodland Escape
Calling all nature-lovers and history buffs! The Woodland Escape is exactly the oasis it sounds like - a cozy cabin in the woods that allows you to step back in time, recharge your soul and make some memories with no distractions. This charming rustic space is a minimalist dream. Situated on a 40 acre property there is so much to do in all seasons: a pond for skating on in our frigid Canadian weather, or for swimming and cooling off when the humid summer air returns. The owners, Peter and Cathy also offer blacksmithing lessons for those who are interested. You can also find fishing and swimming opportunities on numerous lakes within easy driving distance. Firewood is provided for a cozy evening fire before tucking into the quaint little cabin for the best sleep of your life listening to nature just outside your doorstep. While there is no electricity or running water, you can whip up a tasty romantic candlelit dinner on the propane, two burner stove in the cabin or on a propane bbq just outside; drinking water and water for washing dishes is provided. You will find your bathroom to be an outhouse (gasp!) but I promise from personal experience it is the cleanest, prettiest little outhouse you ever did see. Getting away from it all means there is no wifi or cell service, (and that’s really the point, isn’t it?). However, texting seems to work (mostly) and they provide a solar powered charger for your devices and a single led light. Open all year round, you can book your (affordable!) stay at The Woodland Escape at Airbnb.ca.
Now full disclosure: this is my in-law’s cabin, built from their wild and crazy dreams with their very own hands. It’s rustic, magical, and you can feel their love in every detail from the dishes and supplies in the kitchen area to the small but quality selection of books, to the comfy bed and awesome outdoor shower with endless hot water. They have thought of everything that is important for a back to basics, rejuvenating experience you won’t soon forget. I’m even willing to bet you will be wanting to rebook the moment it’s time for you to leave. And if you are interested in learning more about how Peter and Cathy demonstrate the skills of the North American pioneers in the 1700's including log cabin building, primitive shelters, birch bark canoes, and so much more, I invite you to check out their Youtube channel.
You’ll find The Woodland Escape about two and a half hours East of Toronto nestled in the heart of the “Land of Lakes” district.
If you are craving an off-grid adventure or need to find a simplistic serene space to unplug, head to The Woodland Escape and please let Peter and Cathy know we sent you :)
