Don’t Miss a Bill! How to Change Your Address (and Forward Your Mail) Like a Pro

You’ve found your dream home, the moving truck is booked, and you’re one step closer to cozy nights in your new space. But before you settle in, there’s one last to-do that often gets overlooked: changing your address.

We’ve helped a lot of clients transition smoothly into their new homes over the years, and one of the best ways to avoid missed bills or lost mail is to get ahead of those address changes.

So here it is—our quick and helpful guide to forwarding your mail and updating your info like a pro.

Step 1: Forward Your Mail with Canada Post

This is your first line of defense against lost mail. Setting up mail forwarding ensures that anything sent to your old address will still find its way to you—at least for a little while.

📦 Where to go: Canada Post
🕓 When to do it: At least 5 business days before your move date

Choose from:

  • Residential forwarding (temporary or permanent)

  • 4, 12, or 24-month options depending on your needs

💰 Cost: Starts around $65 for 4 months (pricing may vary—check Canada Post’s website for the most up-to-date info)

Step 2: Update Your Address With These Important Places

Even with mail forwarding in place, it’s important to officially update your address with the organizations that matter most.

Here’s your go-to checklist:

💡 Utilities + Services

  • Hydro

  • Gas

  • Internet + cable

  • Cell phone provider

  • Waste collection (check with your new municipality)

💳 Banks + Financial Institutions

  • Bank accounts

  • Credit card companies

  • Loan or mortgage providers

  • Insurance (home, auto, life)

🏛️ Government Services

  • Driver’s licence & health card – update through ServiceOntario

  • CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) – log in to your CRA My Account

  • Elections Canada

  • CPP, OAS, or EI (if applicable)

📬 Other Helpful Reminders

  • Your employer

  • Subscription services (streaming, magazines, monthly boxes)

  • Your child’s school or daycare

  • Your vet or family doctor

  • Loyalty programs and rewards cards

Step 3: Let Friends + Family Know You’ve Moved

Once the logistics are sorted, share the good news! A cute “We’ve Moved!” email, card, or even a quick group message goes a long way. It’s thoughtful and practical—plus, it gives everyone a heads-up next time they’re popping something in the mail.

Bonus Tip: Keep a Running List

It can take a few weeks for every piece of mail to catch up to you, so keep a small notepad or note on your phone to track any sender you missed. If you open a forwarded envelope, make it a habit to update that contact right away.

Changing your address isn’t the most exciting part of moving—but it’s definitely one of the most important. A little planning goes a long way toward avoiding headaches later on.

Need help navigating your next move? From start to finish, we are here with guidance, support, and a really good moving checklist. Let’s make your next move your best one yet.
