Abby’s Appraisals - Little Library Book Review - "Distant Waves" by Suzanne Weyn

Distant Waves by Suzanne Weyn

“You are not done with a book until you pass it to another reader.” - Donalyn Miller

I am a lover of words. All of them. I am a collector of books, journals, and of quotes that resonate with me. I write them down in one of my many notebooks, record them in the notes section of my phone, some so memorable I commit them to memory, tattooing them inside my brain. On Wednesdays, we typically share some thoughtful words in the form of a quote that have spoken to us in one form or another, hoping that maybe they will speak to you as well.

Because I adore written words so very much, I was over the moon with joy when Melissa was on board to install a Little Free Library outside of our office. I love reading. I love it more than I could ever express into words (ironic, isn’t it?) Books feed my soul, fill my cup, transport to me worlds I’ve never imagined. From quite a young age, I have almost always had my nose in a book. Every year I set a loftier goal for myself, reading more and more books with each trip around the sun. Your contributions to our library have kept the options plentiful and my to-be-read stacks tall and taller still as they grow faster than I can consume them. I truly hope you all are enjoying this literary treasure in our community as much as I am.

While we will continue to search out magical words of inspiration, wisdom or just something to make you chuckle most Wednesdays, here on our site I’m going to review (or “appraise” if you will!) a book that I have discovered in our little library and I then I will promptly return it so that it can be shared with one of you!

I must admit that I pulled Distant Waves by Suzanne Weyn from the shelves on looks alone; because it was a somewhat compact paperback that fit easily into my purse. I carry a book with me always because anytime I find myself waiting (orthodontist appointments, outside hockey practices or voice lessons, in line-ups to get into grocery stores) is a wonderful opportunity to take in a page or two.

It did prove to be an easy read and I finished it in about two days. The characters were interesting and engaging, and some were based on real people who were aboard the Titanic…which of course I had to google afterwards to learn more about. There was a supernatural element that was a bit out of the realm of what I would normally choose but I found it surprisingly entertaining. The story was not extremely realistic but nonetheless I did enjoy this one.

Although I found the characters likeable, the ending of the story did fall a little bit flat and it seemed as though the author was in a bit of a rush to have it all end. I give this book a 3 out of 5. If you are interested in checking it out for yourself, I will be returning to our sweet little library later this week.
